# Create and Manage Placements

> Learn how to create and operate ad placements on the A2 platform.

## Who is this guide for?

This guide is for anyone who operates ad placements with a **Retailer** or **Admin** account.

* You want to create a new ad area on your website or app
* You change or manage the settings of existing placements
* You need to configure how ads are displayed and set up yield optimization

***

## Before you begin

<Note>
  The following requirements must be met:

  * Access to the A2 admin console (Placement read/write permission)
  * The location on your website or app where ads will be displayed has been decided
</Note>

***

## What is a placement?

A placement is **a space where ads are displayed**. A banner area on a website, a video player, or an ad slot between pieces of content can all be placements.

Why well-designed placements matter:

* They deliver strong **ad performance (ROAS)** for advertisers
* They deliver stable **ad revenue (eCPM)** for retailers.

***

## Step 1: Create a placement

### Enter basic information

1. In the **Placement Management** menu, click the **Create New Placement** button.
2. Enter the following information:

| Field | Description | Example |
| - | - | - |
| **Name** | A name that makes the placement easy to identify | `main_top_banner`, `product_detail_bottom` |
| **Description** | Describes the placement's location or purpose (optional) | "Homepage main banner area" |

<Tip>
  We recommend naming placements in a `location_format` pattern so they are easy to find later during analysis.
</Tip>

***

## Step 2: Choose an ad type

Choose the type of ads to display in the placement.

### Placement types

| Type | Description | Best suited for |
| - | - | - |
| **Display** | Image banner ads | Sidebars, top/bottom banners |
| **Video** | Video ads | Before/during/after video content |
| **Native** | Ads that blend in with the content | Feeds, recommendation areas |

***

## Step 3: Set size and responsiveness

### Set the placement size

Specify the size of the area where ads will appear.

| Field | Description |
| - | - |
| **Width (px)** | Width of the placement (e.g., 300, 728) |
| **Height (px)** | Height of the placement (e.g., 250, 90) |

**Commonly used sizes:**

* `300×250` - Medium Rectangle (most common)
* `728×90` - Leaderboard
* `160×600` - Wide Skyscraper
* `320×50` - Mobile Banner

### Responsiveness

| Setting | Description | Recommended when |
| - | - | - |
| **Fixed Size** | Only creatives that exactly match the specified size are shown | Your layout is fixed |
| **Resized** | Creatives are automatically resized to fit the placement | You want to accept a variety of creatives |

***

## Step 4: Revenue and operations settings

### Revenue target

| Field | Description |
| - | - |
| **Target eCPM** | Expected revenue per 1,000 impressions |
| **Default CPC** | Default price per click |
| **Default CPA** | Default price per conversion |

<Note>
  When you set a target eCPM, the system optimizes to achieve efficiency above this value.
</Note>

### Approval mode

Determines how requests are handled when an advertiser asks to run ads in this placement.

| Mode | Description | Recommended when |
| - | - | - |
| **Admin Approval** | The retailer reviews and approves requests directly | Quality control is important |
| **Advertiser Delegation** | Trusted advertisers are approved automatically | Ads need to go live quickly |

### Blocked categories (optional)

If you want to block certain kinds of ads, you can specify categories. For example: adult content, gambling, alcohol, and so on.

***

## Step 5: Additional settings for video placements

If you selected the Video type, configure the following additional settings.

### Playback position

| Type | Description |
| - | - |
| **In-Stream** | Plays before, during, or after video content (Pre-roll, Mid-roll, Post-roll) |
| **Out-Stream** | Plays independently in an area outside the content |
| **In-Feed** | Inserted between feed items |

### Skip settings

| Field | Description |
| - | - |
| **Skippable** | Whether users can skip the ad |
| **Skip Offset** | Required viewing time before the skip button appears (e.g., 5 seconds) |

### Duration limits

| Field | Description |
| - | - |
| **Min Duration** | Minimum playback duration of allowed ads |
| **Max Length** | Maximum playback duration of allowed ads |

<Warning>
  To use video placements, your site's video player must support the **VAST specification**.

  \*VAST: A video ad serving standard [defined by the IAB (Interactive Advertising Bureau)](https://iabtechlab.com/standards/vast/)
</Warning>

***

## Step 6: Activate the placement

After completing all settings, click the **Save** button.

New placements are **inactive** by default. To start displaying ads:

1. Select the placement in the placement list.
2. Turn on the **Activate** toggle.

<Note>
  **SDK integration**

  A2 provides the **A2 Web SDK** to make it easy to integrate ads with the platform. After activating the placement, insert the provided placement tag into your website or app.

  For details on ad serving, see the [A2 ad serving guide](/development/en/serving-ad).
</Note>

***

## Edit a placement

### Fields you can edit at any time

* Name, description
* Target eCPM, default CPC, default CPA
* Blocked categories

### Fields you cannot edit while ads are running

If there are active ad campaigns, the following fields cannot be edited:

* Ad type (Display/Video/Native)
* Placement size
* Responsiveness setting

<Note>
  To change these fields, you must first end the allocations of all linked campaigns.
</Note>

## Troubleshooting

<AccordionGroup>
  <Accordion title="Ads are not being displayed">
    Check the following in order:

    1. The placement is **active**
    2. The allocation is in **approved (PUBLISHED)** status
    3. The linked campaign is **active**
    4. The SDK is installed correctly on your website
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Ads look distorted or the wrong size">
    Check that the **responsiveness setting** matches your actual website layout:

    * If set to Fixed Size, the creative size must exactly match the placement size.
    * If set to Resized, check that your CSS is applied correctly.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="I can't delete a placement">
    You cannot delete a placement while it has active campaigns (allocations in PUBLISHED status). End all allocations first.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="I want to use an ad placement and a recommendation placement together">
    A single placement cannot be used for both at the same time. If you need both features in the same location, create separate placements and A/B test them, or implement logic that shows a different placement depending on the situation.
