# Targeting Strategy

> Learn how to set up targeting so your ads are shown only to the user groups you want.

## Who is this guide for?

This guide is for anyone setting up targeting with an **Advertiser** or **Admin** account.

* You want to show ads only to specific users
* You want to create and manage segments (target groups)
* You want to use machine learning-based targeting to improve ad efficiency

***

## Before you begin

<Note>
  The following requirements must be met:

  * Access to the A2 admin console (Audience read/write permission)
  * A **campaign must already be created** to apply targeting to
  * User attribute data must be **integrated** (optional)
</Note>

***

## What is targeting?

Targeting lets you **specify which users see your ads**.

For example:

* "Show sporting goods ads only to men in their 30s"
* "Show store opening ads only to users who live in Seoul"
* "Show ads to users who recently added items to their cart but didn't buy"

    B --> C[Link to campaign]
    C --> D[Shown only to target users]
```
## Understanding the basics
### What is a segment?
A **Segment** is a group of users who meet specific conditions.
| Segment example | Conditions |
| - | - |
| "Men in their 30s" | Gender = Male, Age group = 30s |
| "Seoul residents" | Region = Seoul |
| "Fashion enthusiasts" | Interest = Fashion |
| "Recent visitors" | Visited within the last 7 days |
### Targeting structure
    B -->|"Men in their 30s"| C[Link to campaign]
    C --> D[Ads shown only to those users]
```

***

## Step 1: Create a segment

### Create the segment

1. Go to **Targeting** > **Manage segments**.
2. Click **Create New Segment**.
3. Enter the following information:

| Field | English | Description | Example |
| - | - | - | - |
| **Name** | Name | A name to identify the segment | "Health-minded men in their 30s" |
| **Description** | Description | Notes about the segment | "Men in their 30s interested in fitness and nutrition" |

### Set target conditions

Select the conditions users must meet to be included in the segment.

***

## Step 2: Choose target conditions

### Available attributes

| Attribute | English | Description | Example values |
| - | - | - | - |
| **Gender** | Gender | User's gender | Male, Female |
| **Age group** | Age Group | User's age group | Teens, 20s, 30s, 40s, 50+ |
| **Region** | Region | Region of residence | Seoul, Busan, Jeju, etc. |
| **Interest** | Interest | Areas of interest | Fashion, sports, technology, travel, etc. |
| **Device** | Device | Device used | Mobile, PC, tablet |
| **Purchase history** | Purchase History | Past purchase categories | Electronics, fashion, food, etc. |

<Note>
  Available attributes may vary depending on the integrated data. Contact your account manager.
</Note>

### How conditions are combined

When you set multiple conditions, only users who **meet all conditions** are included (AND).

Example: Gender = Male **and** Age group = 30s **and** Interest = Fitness

***

## Step 3: Apply targeting to a campaign

### Choose a targeting method

There are two ways to apply targeting to a campaign:

<Tabs>
  <Tab title="Auto targeting">
    The system **automatically selects** users who match the campaign goal.

    **Recommended when:**

    * It's hard to define your target users
    * You need broad reach
    * You want to launch a campaign quickly

    <Tip>
      Auto targeting is also optimized for your campaign goal (impressions/clicks/conversions).
    </Tip>
  </Tab>

  <Tab title="Manual targeting">
    **Select and apply** segments you created yourself.

    **Recommended when:**

    * You have clearly defined target users
    * You're running a retargeting campaign
    * You need a granular marketing strategy

    <Note>
      If you select multiple segments, ads are shown to **users in any of the selected segments** (OR).
    </Note>
  </Tab>
</Tabs>

### How to apply

1. On the campaign create or edit screen, go to the **Targeting** section.
2. Choose a targeting method:
   * **Auto**: Applied immediately with no extra setup
   * **Manual**: Select the segments to use

***

## Targeting strategy guide

### Retargeting

Re-target **existing visitors or users who have shown interest**.

| Segment | Conditions | Use case |
| - | - | - |
| **Cart abandoners** | Added to cart but didn't purchase | Discount coupon ads |
| **Recent visitors** | Visited the site within 7 days | New product announcements |
| **Purchasers** | Has past purchase history | Related product recommendations |

### Demographic targeting

Target based on demographic information such as **age, gender, and region**.

| Segment example | Conditions | Suitable ad examples |
| - | - | - |
| "Women in their 20s" | Age = 20s, Gender = Female | Cosmetics, fashion |
| "Men in their 30s in Seoul" | Region = Seoul, Age = 30s, Gender = Male | Fitness, electronics |
| "50 and over" | Age = 50+ | Health foods, travel |

### Interest targeting

Target based on **users' interests or behavioral data**.

| Segment example | Conditions | Suitable ad examples |
| - | - | - |
| "Tech enthusiasts" | Interest = Technology, electronics | New product launches |
| "Travel enthusiasts" | Interest = Travel, airlines | Flights, hotels |
| "Sports fans" | Interest = Sports, fitness | Sporting goods |

***

## Managing segments

### Check estimated reach

When you create a segment, you can check its **estimated reach**.

| Segment | Estimated reach | Recommendation |
| - | - | - |
| Men in their 30s | 150,000 users | ✅ Good size |
| Women in their 20s in Seoul, interest: fashion | 500 users | ⚠️ Too small |

<Warning>
  If a segment is too small, it's hard to secure enough impressions. Relax the conditions or consider auto targeting.
</Warning>

### Edit or delete a segment

1. In **Targeting** > **Manage segments**, select the segment you want to change.
2. Click **Edit** or **Delete**.

<Note>
  If you delete a segment that is in use, targeting for the affected campaigns switches to auto targeting.
</Note>

***

## Troubleshooting

<AccordionGroup>
  <Accordion title="I created a segment, but its estimated reach is 0">
    Check the following:

    1. Whether the conditions are set too narrowly
    2. Whether the relevant attribute data is integrated
    3. Try relaxing some of the conditions
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="How does deleting a segment affect my campaigns?">
    When you delete a segment, campaigns using it automatically switch to **auto targeting**. The campaigns won't stop suddenly, but their targeting scope may change.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="What happens if I apply multiple segments to one campaign?">
    When you apply multiple segments, ads are shown to **all users in segment A or segment B** (OR). This widens your target reach.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="A specific attribute isn't in the list">
    Available attributes depend on the integrated data. If the attribute you want isn't available, contact your account manager about data integration.
  </Accordion>
